This website is the fruit of a long-standing academic cooperation of Benghazi’s Centre for Law and Society Studies and Leiden’s Van Vollenhoven Institute for Law, Governance and Society. This cooperation on the empirical study of law began in 2012. Since then, our team has included scholars and legal practitioners from all over Libya, and produced a substantial body of work on access to justice, institutional development, law- and constitution-making, property conflicts, and the role of law in national reconciliation. In 2021 we embarked on a new four-year research project, Access to Justice in Libya’ (A2JiL), which aims to ascertain whether and to what extent people have access to justice in Libya, and – through identifying and reducing barriers to access – how this can be improved.
Project leader Dr Suliman Ibrahim sits on both the Benghazi and Leiden teams. On the Benghazi side, the team includes Prof. Zahi Mogherbi, Prof. Elkoni Abuda, Prof. Nagib Al-Husadi, Dr Jazeeh Shayteer, Dr Hala Elatrash, Mr Fathi Ageila, and Mr Ali Abu Raas. On the Leiden University side, project leader Dr Suliman Ibrahim is joined by post-doc researcher Dr Bruno Braak, project coordinator Dr Hagar Taha and senior expert Prof. Jan Michiel Otto. Funding for this research is provided by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
This website was launched in July 2023 but it remains under construction. We welcome your ideas for improvement! Should you have questions or comments about this website, our research, or possible cooperation, please reach out to Dr Suliman Ibrahim or Dr Bruno Braak.
